The characters necessary to write Hanyu Pinyin are scattered through the Latin sections of Unicode. This can be done either by directly using precombined letters (vowel with tone marks) or by using a bare vowel followed by a combining diacritic. Not all fonts support the first and third tone vowels or the combining diacritics for the tone marks.
